Let’s connect your Overleaf to ChatGPT or Claude.
An Overleaf connector for ChatGPT, Claude and other AI agents, built for researchers and graduate students writing papers and theses.
Get startedDemo. Left, in ChatGPT or Claude: someone types @, picks the overleaf_thesis connector and asks it to add citations for the models used in the Experiments section. Right, in their Overleaf project: the assistant reads main.tex and refs.bib, adds three BibTeX entries and three \cite commands, and the recompiled PDF shows the citations and a reference list.
Sample prompts for your ChatGPT or Claude
- “What can I do to improve the background section?”
- “Add citations to the background section.”
- “Highlight the table cells in the experiments section.”
Questions
Is there an Overleaf plugin for ChatGPT?
Yes. Overleaf MCP turns an Overleaf project into a ChatGPT connector (a custom MCP server). Add the project here, paste its connector URL into ChatGPT, then type @ in any chat to pick it and ask ChatGPT to read or edit your LaTeX.
Can Claude read and edit my Overleaf project?
Yes. Add the same connector URL as a custom connector in Claude on the web, desktop or mobile, or in Claude Code with a single command.
Does it work with other AI agents?
Yes. Any agent or app that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP can use it, including Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and VS Code.
What can the assistant do in my project?
It can list and read your files and make precise edits: add citations and BibTeX entries, rewrite or shorten a section, restructure chapters and format tables. Every change is a commit you can see and restore in Overleaf's history.
What do I need?
An Overleaf plan that includes Git integration (for the Git token), and a ChatGPT or Claude plan that lets you add custom connectors.
Is my work safe?
Your Overleaf token is stored encrypted. Each project gets its own private connector URL that you can regenerate or disable at any time, and ChatGPT and Claude ask before they change anything.
Is this an official Overleaf, OpenAI or Anthropic product?
No. Overleaf MCP is an independent service and isn't affiliated with Overleaf, OpenAI or Anthropic.
